Welcome to our Equality and Diversity page, where we hope you can find information and resources relating to our academy's commitment to Equality & Inclusion for all pupils. 

 

Excellence, access, inclusion and equality of opportunity are the core values which underpin all our activities. We believe that the active promotion of diversity enriches the lives and experiences of all pupils at the academy. 

We recognise that our academy community is made up of a broad range of individuals and groups with a wide variety of backgrounds, experiences, lifestyles, languages and cultures, and we embrace those differences so that all pupils and staff are free to express and celebrate their identities with pride. 

At Stanground Academy, we are international in our commitment to ensure that diversity and inclusion are embedded into all aspects of academy life, including:

  • Curriculum
  • Pastoral work
  • PSHE and Life Skills programmes
  • Staff training and development
  • Student-led initiatives such as our anti-racism ambassadors
  • EAL support
  • Celebration of significant national and international events

The academy has a designated Diversity & Inclusion Lead who is responsible for embedding equality, diversity and inclusion into all aspects of academy life. 

Mrs Burney is an experienced teacher and passionate advocate for equality for all, and she is committed to working with staff, students, parents and the wider community to help make our vision of true equality of opportunity for every pupil a reality.

We are proud of our approach to multilingualism and currently provide support for around 400 pupils who have been identified as having English as an Additional Language.

Mr Almeida Jarnalo is our dedicated EAL Co-ordinator, and he works closely with these pupils to ensure they are given the support they need to access the curriculum.

 

We use a range of bespoke lessons as well as software from Learning Village to support our pupils as they develop their spoken and written English.

 

 

Equalities Award by Equaliteach

In October 2023, we embarked upon the Equaliteach Bronze Award process. The Equalities Award provides support and guidance for schools to effectively promote equality, diversity and inclusion and allows schools to showcase their commitment to equality. 

We are working hard to achieve every indicator and are confident that we will!

 

 

Culture Day 2023

           

Culture Day was a day full of excitement and expression. We had students from all sorts of ethnic backgrounds, walking on stage, showing off their cultural attire and representing their countries. This unification of our schools’ diverse range of students was a pre-planned process which took a lot of hard work, communication, and determination to plan something we’d never done in a short time frame, with such a small amount of people.

With many people understanding the diligence required to make such a special day happen, we now have a much greater team who are committed to making all our celebrations of culture bigger and better than the last. The students at Stanground Academy love learning about their peers’ countries, their history and understanding important things such as dance and clothing with displays of them all throughout the day. In short, culture day is a day which all our students look forward to.

Anti-Racism Ambassadors

Nova Reid Visit, December 2023

In December of last year, I, along with my fellow Anti-Racism ambassadors had the pleasure of discussing our experiences of racism with Nova Reid. Nova describes herself as a human geographer but is also an author, producer, and Ted ED speaker. She has helped to educate many on becoming more aware with her course becoming Anti-racist with Nova Reid. To define the experience in words I would say it was refreshing and cathartic.

In the wake of 2023 culture day there seems to have been a slight shift as people become more aware of our diverse tapestry and await our next cultural school celebration. Since I have been more open to discussing issues like this. And this visit was much needed. It is intellectually stimulating but also emotionally vulnerable.

As we sat in the classroom, years 9 to 13, we talked about individual experiences with racial bias in school, even classrooms. We talked about how we felt about what we accomplished so far in Anti-racism Ambassadors, our feelings about how much staff have supported us. 

Nova was a great listener and many students commented on how they heard and validated what they felt as they shared some of their own story. We also got to ask her questions for example, “how do you suggest victims of micro-aggressions should react and manage them in a way that can promote healthy discussions, setting boundaries and learning opportunities.” Her answers were thoughtful and enlightening and led on to other important conversations. It was great to engage with her.

Overall, it was a reminder that we all go through some of the same experiences and that sharing it can ease the burden.
